Resource Book

Please find the resource book in its entirety here to download. This year we have tried to make the resource book more user-friendly for those who use this resource digitally. We have kept the sections, but have numbered the page numbers right through. We hope it works well for you during the meeting.

Youth Participation

May 25-26, 2012
Meeting: St. Paul’s United Church, Orillia, Ontario.
Accommodation: Church hall (no showers)

Cost: $75 per person
Includes: Friday lunch & dinner, Saturday breakfast & lunch, all snacks.

Theme: "Listen"

Each Presbytery is invited to name up to 15 youth members to the annual meeting. This is not a parallel youth program but a fully integrated opportunity for youth to participate in the life and deliberations of Conference. Youth members will be part of the main plenary sessions, with overnight accommodation in the church hall. The planning team hopes that drawing together senior youth and young adults will enrich the meeting as a whole and also serve to strengthen Presbytery-based youth ministry in the future.

Who Should Come?

  • This is an opportunity for senior youth, approximately ages 15–25. Presbyteries will determine their own selection processes. To participate with full voting privileges, each youth member must be a confirmed member of the United Church and elected by the Presbytery. There will be an on-line registration form on the Conference website in early March. Youth need to register here as well as through their Presbytery. Suggested criteria for delegate selection;
  • Youth between the ages of 15-25 – this is an approximate guide and Presbyteries may discern that someone who is 14 or 26 is the right person to come;
  • Youth, involved in leadership in church/community, who can reflect on their own faith journey, and bring energy and creativity to the quest for leadership in a transformed church.
  • Given the nature of this meeting, a measure of maturity and capacity to be self-directed is required. Participants will be engaging in discussion and decision-making with the adults at the meeting.

It is our hope that the meeting as a whole will reflect our church’s commitment to grow intercultural and diverse communities.

Request to Presbyteries

Presbyteries are asked to:

  • Determine their own selection process including Presbytery election;
  • Identify one contact person to steer the selection process;
  • Decide if they will subsidize youth participation or support them in seeking assistance from congregations.

"The mission of Toronto Conference is to strengthen Congregations, Pastoral Charges, Outreach Ministries, and Missions to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ."

To fulfill that mission, the Conference Executive will:

  1. Make the best use of the human and financial resources available.
  2. Ensure oversight and compliance within the polity of The United Church of Canada
  3. Provide resources in the Presbyteries to promote the work in the following areas - program, property, personnel and public witness, with further support from the staff in the central Conference office.
