As part of living out its commitment to being inclusive and welcoming of LGBTQ2S+ people, in June of 2017 Living Waters Presbytery voted overwhelmingly to become an ‘Affirming Ministry’ of the United Church of Canada. An Affirm Team was established to promote and encourage all ministries of the presbytery to embrace this commitment of inclusivity. ‘18X18’ is a goal to have at least 18 of our presbytery ministries declared or at least engaged in the Affirming Ministry Program by the end of December 2018. (The end of Presbytery)
Affirm United/S’Affirmer Ensemble was formed as a response to the United Church decision in 1988 to ordain lesbian and gay people. AU/SE created the Affirming Ministries Program to promote prayerful study and reflection around the sensitive inclusion issues of LGBTQ2S+ people. Ministries that complete this process are given a certificate that declares them to be an Affirming Ministry. These ministries then are encouraged to publicize this stance and engage in wider community activities (e.g. local PRIDE activities) to show this marginalized community and their supporters that their ministry is a safe place which will celebrate the fullness and sacredness of LGBTQ2S+ people and their loving relationships.
